Conducting the Witnessing Session

During the Appointment

  • Upon Arrival:
    • Do greet everyone professionally and confirm their identities using their IDs.
    • Don’t witness for anyone you don’t know or who cannot provide proper identification.
  • Witnessing the Signing:
    • Do briefly review the document to understand its nature (optional, but helpful).
    • Don’t pressure anyone to sign. Ensure they do so willingly and without coercion.
    • Look for cues:
      • Physical: Signs of nervousness, sweating, or difficulty holding a pen could indicate duress.
      • Verbal: Statements suggesting pressure, fear, or lack of understanding of the document.
  • Avoiding Distractions:
    • Do maintain a professional demeanor and focus on the signing process.
    • Don’t allow interruptions from phones or engage in unrelated conversations.
  • Completing the Witnessing Process:
    • Do sign the witness line, including your printed name, address, and date.
    • Don’t add any personal opinions or comments to the document.

Document witnessing is a serious responsibility. By following these guidelines and being attentive to details, you can ensure a smooth and legal witnessing process. Remember, if you feel uncomfortable or have doubts about the legitimacy of a document, you have the right to refuse to witness.
